Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Early Classic Period, ca 300 to 400 CE. A hand-built terracotta vessel depicting an adorable, slightly anthropomorphized rendition of a baby kinkajou, a small arboreal nocturnal mammal from the Procyonidae family admired by many indigenous peoples of the Pre-Columbian world, inhabiting from east and south of the Sierra Madres in Mexico throughout Central America to Bolivia east of the Andes and the Atlantic Forest of southeast Brazil; kinkajous also represent the personification of Venus in the MiraÐa tradition. A wonderful example depicting an undeniably a fantastic, expressive creature with wide eyes and broad bat-like ears, large creamy white ovoid eyes incised down their centers, a protruding full nose, applied smiling lips, and stylized limbs. Size: 6.25" W x 5.25" H (15.9 cm x 13.3 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private New York collection; Ex-private collection Morton Schiowitz, Geneva Switzerland then New York acquired in 1960s while living in Switzerland and then by descent to present owner.
