Rome, Imperial Period, Antoninus Pius, ca. 138 to 161 CE. AR drachm(3.16 grams). Commemorative issue. Rome mint. Struck under Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, AD 162. Obverse: DIVVS ANTONINVS, bare head right. Reverse: DIVO PIO, rectangular altar, with horns on top, and door in front.RIC III 441 (Aurelius); MIR 18, 47/4-10; RSC 357; BMCRE 71 (Aurelius and Verus); Strack 7 (Aurelius). Size: 0.65" W (1.7 cm)
Antoninus Pius is known as one of the Five Good Emperors, son of Hadrian, and adoptive father of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. He built temples and theatres, and promoted learning by giving honors and money to teachers. He also preserved many of the laws that Hadrian had created and his reign was one of the most peaceful in the history of the Roman Empire.
