Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A beautiful red-figure plate on a raised tiered foot, featuring a winged Eros depicted as a youth holding an instrument in both hands, while one of his feet is raised upon a "cippus" (pillar), making for a dynamic pose. Though nude, Eros is elaborately adorned with beaded strands, bracelets, cuffs around his thigh and calf, as well as a saccos tied with ribbons. His wings and the floral elements of the field are meticulously delineated. Around the rim is a stylized wave motif. In addition to the skillfully rendered red-figure painting, the artist added lovely white and yellow-orange fugitive paint. The black decoration has gained nice iridescence, particularly on the underside. Size: 8.5" in diameter x 2.25" H (21.6 cm x 5.7 cm)
