The author's copy. Tipped in is a 3 page Autograph Letter, signed from one of Queen Victoria's retainers thanking him for the gift of a copy. Also laid in in are a series of 14 letters to the author from Sir George Younghusband relating to a later (1919) publication on the same subject, as well as a contract appointing Davenport the royalty agent for the new work. The letters relate intimate details of both the evolution and design of the book, and also of the King's household. One of the plates has been trimmed and reinserted with notes and the author's address on the rear. A few penciled notes and markings within. A fascinating and unique copy. Bookplate of Vincent Lloyd Russel on front pastedown.

Condition

A bit rubbed, corners lightly bumped, hinges cracking; foxing; very good.
