Description
American School - "The Raven" - last half 19th century, oil on canvas, unsigned. A posthumous portrait, depicting a child, on an outdoor loggia overlooking a lake, reclined on a pillow on a dais as though sleeping, with one shoe and sock off, guarded from a swooping raven by a pet dog. Framed approximately 15" x 16.675", sight approximately 6.125" x 7.75". Note: In 19th century American portrait painting, the depiction of a child with one shoe off motif symbolizes both childhood and death, the latter meaning implied when combined with additional symbols of mourning, such as the raven in this example.
