Description
Paul Howard Manship (American, 1885-1966), "Europa and the Bull"-1946, cast and patinated bronze footed dish, cast with signature and date reading "PAUL MANSHIP 1946". Circular footed dish or tray with figural relief depicting a female nude beauty with twisting draped cloth on muscular bull jumping over three dolphins within a ocean wave border. Circular dish supported on four petite rounded feet. Diameter approximately 5.8". Note: The subject of this particular lot depicts the Greek mythological story of the seduction of Europa (a Phoencian princess) by the god Zeus while he in the form of a bull. Manship, like other artists throughout time, was interested in this myth and created numerous variations of the subject in sculptural form.
