Item Details
Description
China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A heavy, hollow piece of pottery, with its exterior glazed in a thick, deep green - its surface presenting a silvery iridescent patina. The piece is meant to recreate a well, obviously a crucial piece of infrastructure in the Han Dynasty, where access to clean water for both urban and rural populations was hugely important. Pottery models of important buildings were often placed into Han Dynasty burials to provide for the dead in the afterlife. This model of a well is round, with a flat rim and two sloping, trapezoidal sides capped by two platforms that resemble the flat, tiered planes of ancient Chinese roofs. Comes with stand. Size: 5" W x 5" H (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm); height on stand: 6.4" (16.3 cm)
