Description
**First Time At Auction**

Egypt, Ptolemaic to Roman periods, Alexandria, ca. 2nd century BCE. A mold-made ceramic figure of the god Bes. He is depicted with a large beard, a chubby stomach, and a wide face. The British Museum exhibit on Naukratis shows the remains of terracotta molds for making models just like this one; they were made from a dark red-brown Nile silt in vast workshops. These figures were made for locals, but reflected the influence of Greek artwork in their depictions of the deities from the front, with more humanlike features and details like the musculature on this fellow. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3" W x 4.4" H (7.6 cm x 11.2 cm); height on stand: 6.25" (15.9 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired over twenty years ago
