Southeast Asia, Indonesian, Java or Bali, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand carved and painted wood mask depicting a character for the Topeng dance of Indonesia in which costumed dancers don expressive masks while they perform traditional stories about mythical kings and legendary heroes. The Topeng dance originated in the 17th century, and the word "topeng" literally means mask in Indonesian. This example depicts a human visage with a rather startled expression comprised of a dark red complexion, wide open eyes, a protruding nose with flaring nostrils, a toothy red-lipped smile, and meticulously incised wavy black hair adorned with elegant gold flowers flanking a central ornament. Size: 5.75" W x 7.75" H (14.6 cm x 19.7 cm)
