Description
Greece, probably from Tarentum, ca. 4th century BCE. A tall pottery statuette, showing Leda standing contrapposto, nude save for a robe covering her lower half, and resting on the back half of the swan itself and with a large halo behind her. The swan is seen standing on short legs with its head facing to the side and with a large upper body. The swan was actually the God Zeus in "sheep's clothing" and he seduced the beautiful Leda and produced two children - Helen and Polydeuces. Size: 1.375" L x 2.5" W x 4.875" H (3.5 cm x 6.4 cm x 12.4 cm).
Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
