Item Details
Description
China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A mold-made, blackware censer of the form known as a "po shan lu." These censers are specific to the Han period and were made in the form of a mythical mountain of immortality. This example showcases the form of the mountain, with tiered layers and low relief antelope scaling its sides. The antelope frieze is a rare touch for this type of object. The base of the censer has a fitted lip to hold the lid; its surface is smooth aside from on the wide foot, which has a wave pattern, suggesting a scene of the sea below the mountain. Size: 4.25" W x 8" H (10.8 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection
