Roman Bronze Togatus Figure
Roman Bronze Togatus Figure
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze shrine figure of a man wearing a toga. He has a youthful face, no beard, and a head of curly hair. The toga is draped over one shoulder and is depicted simply, without much detail. The toga had begun to fall out of fashion in the late first century BCE, so the Emperor Augustus made it an unofficial state dress, reviving the ancient look. Togatus figures come in many varieties, and votive ones of this size seem to have been made for a personal shrine or altar. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.5" W x 4.3" H (3.8 cm x 10.9 cm); height on stand: 5.05" (12.8 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
