Description
Cyrus Maynard Running, American, 1913-1976, Minnesota, South Dakota Landscape, mural, mosaic, woodcut “City Fantasy” Signed and dated lower right, title on verso Cyrus Running was a second-generation Norwegian immigrant born in South Dakota. He studied with Grant Wood, taught art to many students at the University of Omaha and Concordia College, and served as art department chair for Luther College, for which the gallery was named after. Planes of color are assembled together to form buildings for an imagined or desired skyline view, creating Running’s “Fantasy City”. There are curved edges, outlines that extend beyond forms, lines that extend above shapes, and textured lines placed in areas that add further detail. Running nicely balanced not only the various types of organic forms, but the use of horizontal and vertical structures. The city silhouette is set against a red sky that fades in certain areas, mimicking the cover of clouds in the sky. The chosen colors further remove Running’s city from reality, creating an otherworldly, even futuristic, rendition of an imagined city.Dimensions: 16 x 24 in., 17.25 x 25.25 in. frameArtist or Maker: Cyrus RunningMedium: Oil on canvasDate: 1962
