Description
Wrought by Mary Phillips Aged 13 January 1804. Crafted of wool embroidery and crewel work. Features alphabet and numbers with a poem "My heart exults while to the attentive eye the curious needle spreads the enameled die. When varing shades the pleasing task beguile my friend approve me and parents smile. When close attention carefully inwrought fair education paints the pleasing thought. Inserts the curious line on proper ground complete the work and scatters roses round" Bird or eagle atop with wooded scene on bottom with deer. Floral and geometric borders. Mary Phillips Gardner (1790-1846) was pupil at Mrs. Saunders & Miss Beach's Academy for girls. Schoolgirl needlework art from the academy is highly collected. Work window measures 20" x 17". Frame measures 21 1/2" x 18 1/2" Good condition with staining and fading. Frame with losses and restorations. Will not ship. Will refer a local shipper
