The covers, blue backgrounds with gold decoration and lettering, are in good condition, with scuffs but no prominent stains, with straight spines, which are slightly darkened, but on which the gilt lettering is clearly legible, and with shallow wear to several outside corners. The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages, but three of the four inside spreads have cracks to their gutters. There is a laid-in attachment to the front inside cover gutter of Volume I, stating the publisher's pricing policy. There are no other attachments. I've found a few pencil notations, but no indelible writing. The outside edges have a number of chips and shallow tears, but there are no deep tears. There is light sunning to most borders, but few other stains, with all the text unfaded and clean. The two frontispiece illlustrations, of Napoleon and Talleyrand, and in excellent condition.
