Description
Manuscript document, 1p, 7.75 x 12 in., April 2, 1792. Representing a Massachusetts state election, for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and Senators. Signed by the town clerk and three selectmen of Bridgewater. Bridgewater turned in nearly the same number of votes for John Hancock (53) and Samuel Phillips (54) for Governor, and Samuel Adams (32) and David Cobb (37) for Lieutenant Governor. Benjamin Lincoln received 8 votes for Governor, Thomas Russell 4, and David Cobb 3.
John Hancock (1736/1737-1793) served as first and third Governor of Massachusetts (1780-1785, 1787-1793, died in office). He ensured that his state ratified the US Constitution in 1788. He was instrumental in various crises that led to the Revolutionary War. One of those incidents involved one of Hancock's ships, the Liberty. Since he had already tangled with the British on a number of occasions, his opposition and bold signature on the Declaration of Independence meant that if the colonists had lost, Hancock would surely have been charged with treason.
Samuel Adams (1722-1803) became Lieutenant Governor under Hancock and the fourth Governor of the state. He was also the first President of the state senate.
Condition
Some edge scuffing and toning, especially at top.
