Description
1653 1ed Francis Bacon Scripta Astronomy SCIENCE Philosophy Labyrinth Elzevier
“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.” ― Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion.
A rare collection of various Latin works and fragments of Francis Bacon, published here for the first time by Isaac Gruter. Willems says this work follows the example that is common by other Elzevier printings. However according to Goldsmid,
“It appears that Louis Elzevier only printed the sheet bearing the signature x, and the six preliminary leaves. The printer of the remainder was probably J. de Jonge.”
The following works are included in this printing:
“De Fluxu et Refluxu Maris” ('Of the Ebb and Flow of the Sea')
“Thema Coeli” ('Theory of the Heavens)
“Descriptio Globi Intellectualis” ('A Description of the Intellectual Globe')
“Cogitata et Visa de Interpretatione Naturae” ('Thoughts and Conclusions on the Interpretation of Nature
“Filium Labyrinthi sive Formula Inquisitionis”
“Topica Inquisitionis de Luce et Lumine” ('Topical Inquisitions into Light and Luminosity'
