This is a set of (4) sterling silver flat handle butter spreaders in the 1908 pattern 'Madame Jumel' by Whiting division. (3) of these are have monogrammed handles and (1) is without a monogram. These spreaders are all marked on the back of the handle with the Whiting Manufacturing Co. trademark , STERLING, and PAT. 1909. Each spreader measures approximately 5" and weighs 16 grams. The total weight for all (4) is 64.1. In 1866, this firm became Whiting Manufacturing Co. It was purchased by Gorham in 1924.

Whiting Silver was founded in 1866 by William Dean Whiting, who had earned a reputation as a master maker of sterling silver. During the late 19th century, the firm was one of the premier manufacturers of sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and other decorative objects such as snuff boxes.
