The ‘Sachsenspiegel’ is one of the most important law books of the Holy Roman Empire. It was originally written in the early 13th-century on customary law and was used regularly as late as the early 20th-century. It was also the first lengthy legal document to be written in German instead of Latin.
It became a model for law books in German and influenced law in Eastern Europe and the Netherlands. It predominantly deals with common law and feudal law with respect to the Catholic Church.
