Jacobsen, Antonio Nicolo Gasparo (Danish/American 1850-1921), The Niagara, 1877, oil on canvas on 19th century stretcher, 22 x 36 inches, Signed Antonio Jacobsen, NY 1877, 237 8th Avenue, 23.31 lower right, Provenance: Jean Bohne Inc, N.Y., Flying an American Flag with a buoy in the foreground and a racing schooner in the background. The Niagara carried the first Japanese diplomats to visit the US (in 1860), where they met President James Buchanan in the White House, back to Japan. It plays a large role in the introduction of modern, post-industrial revolutionary technology into Japan in the 19th century--it is a pre-Civil War steamship.
Condition
In generally good condition apart from being relined, with a network of concentric crazing and discolored varnish throughout.
