Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A redware bowl with a slightly raised, round foot and a deep body with concave sides and a rounded rim. Around the rim are four raised leaves on long vines, creating a simple but elegant design. This is an example of simple Samian Ware (sometimes known as terra sigillata) or possibly an early Fine Ware (fineware). These types of pottery were mass produced in Roman provinces and exported throughout the western part of the Empire. They were made to be used for displaying and serving foods. Many of them are known from Roman Britain; they are also known from the Pompeii "hoard," a collection of the vessels found in a crate that had arrived in the town and not yet been taken out of their packaging when Mt. Vesuvius erupted on August 23, 79 CE. Size: 5.95" W x 1.45" H (15.1 cm x 3.7 cm)
