Hanau Sterling Silver Marriage Spoon, circa 1890. This is a wonderful Hanau sterling silver spoon made to resemble a Dutch marriage spoon. Although this piece was cast it still maintains the integrity of the design.; Marriage spoons, or Lovespoons, have a rich in interesting history that dates back to the seventeenth century. Originally, these spoons were carved wood and given to a woman by her suitor. It was important that the young woman’s father saw that her potential husband had woodworking skills. Later these spoons were made of silver and bestowed to a couple on their wedding day. Today, lovespoons or marriage spoons are given as tokens of love on special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or Valentine’s day.; This piece is 7” long and the spoon is 2” at its widest point. This piece weighs approximately 60.00 grams or 1.92 troy ounces. This piece is marked on the back with Hanau silver stamps.; This would make a lovely gift to a young couple or a nice addition to your antique silver collection!
