One of the best-known ventriloquist makers in the world, Frank Marshall (Marzalkiewicz) (1900-1969) apprenticed under Charles Mack starting as a 13 year old. Frank eventually took over the business in the early 1930’s and became sought after as one of the finest puppet makers in the world. He went on to create such masterpieces as Jerry Mahoney, Farfel, Danny O’ Day, and there is some debate that he may even have carved Charlie McCarthy. His figures are treasured by professionals and collectors. This is “Jimmy” a Saucy Kid Character. He was purchased directly from Frank Marshall in June of 1933 by Herman Guelpa. Herman was McIlhany’s magic mentor and Bill first saw “Jimmy” when he was eight years old and was able to acquire him in 2011. “Jimmy” has articulated mouth, beautiful carved wood hands & glass eyes. This is a beautiful example of Marshall’s expertise. Condition: Very Good. VentHaven Museum in Ft. Mitchell, KY was able to locate the original receipt showing that Guelpa paid Marshall $20 for this figure. On the back of the receipt Guelpa wrote a hand written note to Marshall that said:“I guess it is about time that I was writing to you for more instructions. I was going to write sooner, but I thought two weeks more practice on the instruction that you gave me for the first month would benefit me.I have been practicing on your first list of instructions for about a month and a half. I feel that I am now ready for more instructions.I think I have found my vent voice. My voice tires easily. I guess I will overcome this later. Some days when I practice I find my vent voice is very clear, other times it is harsh. What causes that? Do you think later on I will overcome this?Mr. Marshall, will you please send me further instructions. I am very well satisfied with my figure, and it is becoming easier to handle every day. It seems human to me.”
