Description
1738 John Milton Comus Masque Royal Court Dancing Baroque Theatre Fantasy Poetry
“Mortals that would follow me,
Love virtue, she alone is free,
She can teach ye how to climb
Higher than the Sphery chime.”
― John Milton, Comus
John Milton wrote this masque, ‘Comus’, in honor chastity in 1634. It would be published anonymously at first, but later saw inclusion in Milton’s complete poems. This masque, a form of courtly dance entertainment from the 16th-century, included original baroque music composed by Henry Lawes. However, even though traditional masques were performed in the royal court, this one was not intended to be in the courts, but rather the home of Lord Bridgewater, Ludlow Castle.
