Description

A fine set of four English fire-gilt brass large table clock feet Anonymous, probably late 17th century Each of Baroque hipped S scroll form with chased acanthus foliage to upper and lower margins and cast in two sections mitre-joined through the centre, each 7cm (2.75ins) high. The feet in the current lot are related to those used by Tompion for two of his most important table clocks; the year-going Mostyn Tompion of circa 1689 and the Medici grande sonnerie table clock of circa 1696 (both are illustrated in Evans, Jeremy THOMAS TOMPION at the Dial and Three Crowns pages 42 and 43). Larger versions were also used by Tompion for William III s three month longcase clock and Prince George s Year going equation timepiece dating to circa 1700 and 1703 respectively (both are illustrated in Garnier, Richard and Carter, Jonathan The Golden Age of English Horology, Masterpieces from The Tom Scott COLLECTION on page 23). From this it would be reasonable to suggest that the current lot were intended to be used for or were fitted to an important large table clock by one of the leading clockmakers of the period such as Tompion.
