Description
Colorful, exotic, hand painted and potted large Chinese famille rose teapot that is very striking with fine, minute paintings.
A large porcelain teapot with a domed lid. The teapot shape is oval with a bulge in the middle that tapers upwards to a round mouth and tapering downwards to a raised foot. The designs are exact and varied. There are mythical beasts, butterflies, and birds. There are panels in shapes such as vases and boxes. The designs were painted in red, blue, yellow, and green over glaze enamels. Black has been used to outline and define. The designs have been painted with gold to make the teapot look rich. The lid reflects the paintings on the body. The one exception is the lid knob which is painted gold. Gold has also been used on the spout and handle.
The foot ring is not glazed but the base is glazed. The lid has a flange on the underside that is not glazed. This matches the mouth that is also not glazed. There is a curved spout and a curved handle. The glaze is not super white but is a dull white.
There are no marks or labels.
MEASUREMENTS 9 ½†(24.1 cm) long x 7†(17.8 cm) diameter x 7 ¼†(18.4 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lb 9.3 oz (1.17 kg)
CONDITION The lid has three small chips on the rim edge. The lid knob has worn gilding. The spout has worn gilding and chips on the spout end. The handle has chips on the edges of the handle and wear to the gilding. There are no cracks or breaks and the body of the teapot rings true. The enameling on the teapot body and lid are bright and not worn. The teapot looks entire and fresh.
A striking well painted old teapot. It is large and shows well.
