Description
Francis Gary Powers' original prison journal with handwriting.
This particular Russian issued notebook, measuring 8 x 6.5'' was used by Powers to conjugate Russian verbs. His clear handwritten notes, in pencil, remain intact.
Powers began learning Russian during his time in prison. His Russian education became a great source of controversy back on US shores where he was labeled a defector and traitor. The hatred and fear the American public felt towards the Soviets were wrongly projected onto Francis Gary Powers. At a time when the world was on the brink of chaos, and any connection to Russia was suspect. Years later the CIA published a report on Francis Gary Powers's conduct, saying he acted honorably throughout his service - and entirely per the instructions given to him.
Francis Gary Powers was a distinguished pilot for the CIA's U-2 program during the height of the Cold War. Powers was arrested after his spy plane was shot down while flying a high-risk reconnaissance mission over Soviet airspace.
