Description
Two unused Zippo lighters, one commemorating the June 6, 1963, Pacific Fleet Presidential Demonstration on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, and the other from President Kennedy's June 1963 European trip. The June 6th commemorative lighter is 2.25 x 1.5'' and features the Aircraft Carrier outlined in black as it moves through blue waves with red lettering underneath reading: "U.S.S. Kitty Hawk CVA 63." Featured on the lid are Lieutenant Hirschy's initials, and "Pacific Fleet Presidential Demonstration 6 June 1963" on the verso, as well as the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk's seal beneath the inscription. The European trip lighter measures 2.25 x 1.25'' and depicts the Seal of the President of the United States on the front and "European Trip of President Kennedy June 1963" on the verso.
It was on this European trip that President Kennedy made his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech aimed to underline the support of the United States for West Germany 22 months after Soviet-supported East Germany erected the Berlin Wall to prevent mass emigration to the West. The message was aimed as much at the Soviets as it was at Berliners and was a clear statement of U.S. policy in the wake of the construction of the Berlin Wall. The speech is considered one of Kennedy's best, both a notable moment of the Cold War and a high point of the New Frontier. It was a great morale boost for West Berliners, who lived in an enclave deep inside East Germany and feared a possible East German occupation.
These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
