Description
A collection of objects from President Kennedy's June 23rd to 26th, 1963 trip to Germany, where he visited Cologne, Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Hanau, Frankfurt, and Wiesbaden. This lot includes the "Schedule and Information" booklet for the trip, with a very detailed itinerary, various maps, charts for the order of motorcades, and the names of those Kennedy would be meeting. The cover of the 10.5 x 8'' booklet is sage green with brown text and a large Presidential Seal in cream. There is also a list of "President Kennedy's Official Party" and " Other Officials Accompanying the President," (10.5 x 8"), a White House Telephone Directory booklet (6.5 x 5''), a card indicating Lt. Hirschy as an official member of the Presidential party, a napkin from the American Embassy Club in Bonn, and a food bill and weekly calendar from the American Embassy Club in Bad Godesberg, where the President gave a dinner for Konrad Adenauer, the Chancellor of Germany.
Also in this lot is a 12 x 9'' folder related to the President's visit to review the United States Army in Hanau. This folder contains a "General Information" booklet, as well as programmes detailing the "distinguished guests," "troop commanders," and "participating units," involved in the review. There are also three maps detailing the progression of the military display, two of them illustrated in both black and red, one of them poster sized.
Included as well are two candid vintage color photographs, both 8 x 10'', one of Kennedy reviewing military troops and the other of him delivering a speech. All materials are in excellent condition save the American Embassy Club calendar, which is creased.
This trip to Germany culminated in Kennedy's famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech on June 26, 1963, a landmark moment for him. To the President the Berlin Wall was a symbol of the stark differences between Cold War communism and American democracy, and in his speech Kennedy made a powerful stand for freedom, liberty, and democracy. By claiming he was a Berliner - a German line that he made sure to write down phonetically in order to be able to pronounce it correctly - Kennedy aligned himself with the citizens of the city and made a promise to assist in working towards a "day when this city will be joined as one." Altogether John F. Kennedy's trip to Germany was a huge success and a defining moment in his Presidency. Photographs: 8 x 10''. Booklet: 10.5 x 8''. Directory: 6.5 x 5''. Folder: 12 x 9''
