This is an incredible 19th Century Burmese Silver Repoussé Bowl. This hand-crafted ceremonial piece features depictions of deities known as “Nats” as well as a floral motif. This bowl is from Burma, what is now Myanmar, and was made sometime between 1850 and 1870. There are ten renowned traditional arts and crafts from Myanmar fondly known as “Pan Sel Myo”, or 10 types of flowers. Many of the works produced play a critical role in daily life. “Patain” is the art of making gold and silver objects. Craftsmen make items such as brass gongs, copper pots, gold trays, silver cups and bowls. Perhaps what is most remarkable about Patain objects is that they are entirely hand-made out of one sheet of silver. Folklore and religion is an integral part to Myanmar’s society. Nats, or spirits of people who died a violent death, are a deep part of Myanmar’s culture. There are 37 Nats that are worshiped across the different regions of the country. Featured on this bowl are six different Nats. This elegant bowl features some incredible silver work, clearly done by a master silversmith. This piece was made by a hand-hammering technique known as repoussé. Perhaps what is most remarkable about this piece is that it is entirely hand-made out of one sheet of silver. Because the silversmiths work with one piece of silver molding it into a bowl there are some areas where the silver thins and leads to tiny pin holes. This piece also showcases beautiful bright cut work and high relief. Each of the six Nats are stunningly detailed and three dimensional. On the bottom of the piece is a beautifully engraved peacock, which is meant to represent the artists’ signature. This antique silver bowl is a lovely size. It has a diameter of 3 1/2 inches, a height of 3 inches and an interior depth of 3 inches. This piece is small enough to sit on a shelf when not in use but eye-catching enough to be a constant talking piece. This piece weighs approximately 170 grams or 5.46 troy ounces. This piece is in excellent condition. This stunning antique Burmese silver piece would make a fabulous gift or incredible addition to your silver collection!
