Description
William Hogarth (British, 1697-1764), "First Stage of Cruelty" and "Second State of Cruelty", etchings and engravings, February 1, 1751. From the series "The Four Stages of Cruelty", both prints depict a different stage in the life of the fictional character Tom Nero and were intended as a form of moral instruction; showing the easy path from childish thug to convicted criminal. Both with poetic narrative by the Rev. James Townley (1714-1778) in the plates. Marked "Design'd by W. Hogarth" and "Published according to the Act of Parliament Feb 1. 1751". First Stage framed approximately 28.12" x 24.25", sight approximately 15.37" x 12.87". Second stage framed approximately 27.5" x 19.75", print approximately 22" x 16.25".
