Description
Felipe Jesus Consalvos Mixed media collage on photograph 7 1/2 x 9 1/2"1920-1950 Possibly on the back of the collage but the work is framed with a paper backing. The Comedy of Human Life
Felipe Jesus Consalvos (1891 – c. 1960) was a Cuban-American cigar roller and artist, known for his posthumously-discovered body of art work based on the vernacular tradition of cigar band collage. Felipe was born near Havana, Cuba in 1891. He later married and eventually moved to Miami with his family around 1920, eventually moving to Brooklyn and finally to Philadelphia where he is believed to have died in the 1950s or 1960s. As can be seen in his artwork, Consalvos worked for much of his life as a factory cigar roller.
A body of Consalvos' art work was discovered in 1983 at a Philadelphia garage sale. The body of work consists of a limited collection of only 800 collages on paper, found photographs, musical instruments, furniture, and other objects. Consalvos' playful and often subversively political work appropriated cigar bands and cigar-box paper, along with magazine images, family photographs, postage stamps, and cut-up money.
This work, The Comedy of Human Life, is indicative of Consalvos' eye. It showcases his humor by displaying an altered but traditional, family photograph with different faces and heads, as well as, a 'ticket' to participate in the absurdness of life. In select works, Consalvos cut out George Washington's head from real dollar bills and placed it in his collages. This particular collage is important because it features a George Washington head which Consalvos carefully clipped from a real dollar bill.
With the purchase of this piece, you will also receive a limited edition catalog, "Cigarmaker, Creator, Healer & Man: The Artwork of Felipe Jesus Consalvos," 1st edition, 2005, Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, very good condition.
