Continental Europe, Baroque Period, ca. 17th century. A two-sided vellum page, hand-illustrated with antiphonal musical annotation and lyrics in Latin. Blue and red details form a large capital letter on each side. This page came from an antiphonary, one of the liturgical books created for use by the liturgical choir in the Roman Catholic Church. An antiphon in Christian music is a responsory by a choir or congregation, often a Gregorian chant. Two choirs sing in alternation, one singing the verses of a psalm and the other singing a refrain (the antiphon). Antiphonal chants have a fascinating history and reflect the ancient choral traditions of the Church. Examples of these chants are the Introit and Communion. Size: 15.25" W x 21.25" H (38.7 cm x 54 cm)
