Description
A lovely Victorian rectangular sterling silver vinaigrette, made by George Unite & Sons, a fine silversmith from Birmingham. The vinaigrette has markings in the interior of its lid and also on the inside base. Markings indicate maker's mark (GU) and also dates this piece to 1875. The flat silver box has a lovely leaf decoration on the lid and the sides, mixed in with geometric patterns. The articulation of these motifs is very careful and considered. The screen (grille) lid has a scrolling foliage pattern, and the grille is hinged and lifts to the side. The screen is hand-chased and allows you to see where the original sponge for the vinaigrette would be paced. This case can be used as a box, for small personal objects, or it can be used to carry a scent, as was its original purpose. The case measures 1-3/4 inches by 1/2 inch and weighs 29.5 grams. The case opens an closes perfectly. There is an empty space on the upper lid decoration, perfect for an engraving or a monogram. A great silver piece for an unique vinaigrette collection.
