Charles Gassner was a painter of both abstract and figurative subjects. He was born in the Netherlands and studied art in The Hague and Berlin. He arrived in South Africa in 1948. In the early years he was mainly a painter of figures. By the end of the 1950's Gassner was living in London and he taught at the world renowned Camberwell. By this time his work was predominantly abstract. When he returned to South Africa a body of his respected work was kept in the UK where it can be found in private collections, museums and galleries.
Gassner was one of a group of talented artists working in the very distinctive South African School of Representational Abstraction, during what has become termed as the "Isolation Years". The work of South African abstract artists from this period has been and continues to be experiencing strong renewed interest and is considered to be one of the most important in South African history. Major art publications and studies are indicating that there is a dramatic growth in interest in South African art and some major auction houses and major museums are currently being built in South Africa.
Interest in Gassner specifically has grown and some of his paintings have realized sales in excess of $8,000. He has had many gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the SMAC Art Gallery, Stellenbosch. His painting," Meisje met Zwarte Hoed" sold at Strauss & Co., Cape Town "Important South African Paintings for $12,974.
We own perhaps one of the largest collections of his work and will be auctioning off over 100 lots of beautiful paintings, charcoal, watercolor and mix media abstract works on paper.
