Description
Large Charleston Coin Silver Ladle. Made by the accomplished firm of Augustus Hayden and William G. Whilden, Charleston, S.C., 1855 - 1863. This is a larger pair at 7" in length and have exceptionally fine detailing such as feathered claws. The partners of Hayden & Whilden were purveyors of military weapons and flags for the south during the Civil War. They were both accomplished silversmiths and widely respected jewelers. The fim of Hayden and Whilden ended when William G. Whilden became a lieutenant in the elite Confederate Washington Artillery stationed in Charleston South Carolina. He served his unit until his company surrendered with the Army of Tennessee at Greensboro North Carolina on April 26, 1865. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. The ladle measures Bowl 4"x3.50"x13 1/2". Weight 175 grams
