Antique Victorian Aesthetic Silver Plate Wedding Basket

Description

This exquisite Meridian B Company quadruple plated wedding basket is a lovely decorative silver plated item and an historical piece in itself. The basket is pattern number 1712 and has an ornate floral decoration. It is a classic example from the Victorian Aesthetic period, between 1870 - 1900, with very detailed designs all around. The very elaborate handle has flowers along the top and a scroll design where the handle meets the hinge. It feature some bright but flowers at the interior center base and a more abstract pattern of foliage on the curving rim. The basket is footed by four decorated supports. Meriden Britannia Company was quite unique in its manufacturing process as it consisted in depositing an extra amount of silver on spoons and forks parts suffering the harder wear. Meriden Britannia Co spoke proudly about their silver plate as they were "...plated three times heavier on the three points most exposed to wear ... adding correspondingly to their durability...". The wedding basket is extra sturdy and in great condition with no dents. The basket measures 6-1/2 inches tall by 9 inches at the diameter.
