Description
This lot consists of an Original Watercolor and Ink on Paper signed 'Bernard Buffet' and dated '55'. Done in the abstract style associated with Bernard Buffet (1929 - 1999). French. Bernard Buffet was a highly important exponent of Expressionism in France. His angular and shadow line clowns are among his most popular - and valuable subjects. His use of exaggerated shadows layed out in lines - a classic woodcut method - presaged the dot mania of Roy Lichtenstein's paintings, which used the dot device from comics and illustrations. Buffet was an artist of uncompromising conviction, and his idiosyncratic style was adamant in its philosophical rejection of abstract art. His iconic works scream mid-century modern. Buffet's life was a turbulent one peppered with turbulent relationships and concomitantly his clowns are almost never happy, at most displaying a Mona Lisa like obscuration of emotion.. He committed suicide in 1999, despondent that he could no longer work due to Parkinson's disease.
