Charles Frederick Surendorf
(American, 1906-1979)
An early and rare linocut on paper by California print-maker Charles Surendorf.
Charles Frederick Surendorf worked in a regionalist style, his work sometimes compared to the work of Thomas Hart Benton.
Surendorf is best known for his woodcuts, and wood and linoleum engravings.
In 1959, Art Digest named Charles Surendorf as one of the top 25 woodblock artists in the world.
This work, 'The Mitiaro at Moorea' dated 1939, is a rare print of the Polynesian tropics near Tahiti.
It is numbered 10/50. Number 6/50 is in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
