Description
Charming hand formed ceramic figure of Pan, Greek god of the hunt and chaser of nymphs resting with a young faun on his lap. Pan is said to have chased many nymphs but was unable to catch any because being half human and half goat, he was considered ugly and frightening. It seems possible that the sculptor of this fine figure assumes he did catch one nymph and produce a child with whom he seems quite taken. Done in red clay and nicely hand formed with great detail and skill but no artist signature. Thought to be a product of Cleveland school ceramics. Height is 8 1/2 inches and length is 15 inches. A combination of bisque and glaze especially noted in the blue and yellow flowers in which Pan sits and which hang in a lei around the young faun's neck. Excellent condition.
