Description
A fantastic Roman marble head of Emperor Commodus (161-192 AD) depicted as Dionysus, c. 2nd- 3rd Century AD, with delicate features, wearing a fillet and wreath of ivy and berries, his hair styled back into a rectangular coiled plait at the nape of his neck. H: 11 ¾ in (29.8 cm). The surfaces ara quite nice with patches of mineral deposits and the head is nicely mounted on a sturdy square stone base. Very well-preserved. Ex Austrian collection acquired in the 1930's
