Refined oil on table. Signed low right by the exquisite french painter Louis Robbe. Depicting an interior barn scene, with a light very well achieved, bringing that intimate tone. Surrounded by an original french gilded frame. This paintings is a delicate and elaborate example of this french artist.Size: 15 1/2 inches (h) x 20 inches (w) only canvas/panel and 22 3/4 inches (h) x 27 1/2 inches (w) framed. Who was Louis Robbe?Animal painter, engraver and watercolorist of cattle. Elder brother and teacher of Henri ROBBE. Pupil of J. van de WIELE in Kortrijk, then at the Academy of that city, where he was distinguished in 1820 and 1824. Doctor of Law at Ghent (1830). Appointed as a lawyer in 1835. Appointed to the Ministry of Finance in Brussels (1840) where he settled. He devoted himself seriously to painting after 1833, and was influenced by his masters J.B. De JONGHE and E. VERBOECKHOVEN. Also inspired by the work of French BRASCASSART introduces realism in animal art. First exhibition in 1835 in Ghent. Works with the realistic Ch. De GROUX, in the execution of La Campine, a canvas that won a great success in Brussels in 1854.A great Belgian painter of the 19th century (1806-1887), brother of Henri ROBBE, medalist in 1830, in 1837, he obtained a medal in Brussels, and in 1855, the same reward was awarded to him in Paris at the universal exhibition. Chevalier de Léopold in 1843, Officer in 1863, he obtained the Legion of Honor in 1845Louis ROBBE (1806-1887), renowned animal painter, of the Belgian school. Born in Courtrai in 1806, died in Brussels in 1887. Engraver and animal painter. Also a lawyer. Pupil of the academy of his hometown and JB de JONGHE. He exhibited successfully. Nic. Of KEYSER and L. GALLAIT both paid tribute to the artist\'s vigorous style, while reproaching him with some reminiscences of P. POTTER and VERBOECKHOVEN. He settled in Brussels in 1840 as a lawyer in the Ministry of Finance and had a busy business practice.The painter ROBBE reached the apogee of his art at the exhibition of Brussels in 1854. Later, ROBBE applied himself to the study of the landscape. But a compromised health prevented him from developing in the last twenty years of his life. He exercised a serious influence on the kind to which the memory of his success is attached. He was a gifted singer and an excellent musician.His works are exhibited in the museums of Brussels, Antwerp, Arlon, Bruges, Kortrijk, Liège, Tournai, Ghent, Cincinnati, Hamburg, Lille, Liege, Malines, Saint-Nicolas, Moscow and Washington.
