Description
London 1948 Olympic Games official poster, designed by Walter Herz (1909-1965), the largest version, double-crown, 30 by 20in., featuring Big Ben and Parliament, Discobolus and the Olympic Rings, colour lithograph published by McCorquodale & Co Ltd, professionally restored, mounted, framed & glazed, 90 by 65cm. Traditionally the Olympic poster is selected by a design competition. But as the 1948 Olympic Games had to be organised with such haste, there was no time. The choice of poster was decided by the Executive Committee after a handful of designs had been submitted. The official report for the 1948 Games informs us that the poster was printed in three sizes, double crown 20 by 30in. (50,000), crown 15 by 20in. (25,000) and double royal 25 by 40in. (25,000).
