Description
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A bronze furniture fitting in the form of a lion with open roaring mouth, ruff-like mane and curling line rendering the musculature on the shoulder, facial details and laid-back ears; mounted on a custom-made stand. 237 grams, 70mm including stand (2 3/4"). Property of a Swiss collector; acquired Galerie Stucker, Berne, December 2011, lot 7502 (part); formerly in a private collection formed before 1980. The style is characteristic of Persian-period depictions of lions from Egypt and allows a dating to the Achaemenid empire. For a comparable lion-shaped furniture leg carved in wood cf. item 1996,0928.1 in the British Museum.
