Description
This woodblock print depicts a Courtesan in beautiful attire, likely a 'Yoshiwara Girl' who worked in the pleasure district. She wears an opulent headdress, with maple leaf medallions, very ornate, and regal in her appearance, and is very typical of Eisen's Yoshiwara women. Eisen did several series on Bijin, but we do not know from which series this particular Courtesan comes from. There are copious ciphers and seals, including a Kiwame censor seal, title box, artist and publisher ciphers. The date ciphers we believe are located at the top and bottom of the blue title cartouche on the left upper side. The first rounded symbol in the small circle indicates the 12th month. The bottom small circle is the symbol for the year of the Boar. This print bears the publisher seal of Iseya Rihei. According to the book by Andreas Marks, 'Publishers of Japanese Woodblock Prints: A Compendium', Rihei published 'Bijin' prints for Eisen in 1826 (which is a year of the Boar), so we believe this print dates to the 12th month of 1826. This print measures 14" x 9.75".
Keisai Eisen (1790-1848) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who specialised in bijin-ga print designs of beautiful women. In addition to producing a prolific number of prints, he was a writer.

Condition
It has no margins, which is expected for Eisen's prints. Given its age, this print is in excellent condition, with toning, some foxing over her headdress, a small stain in the bottom right corner and several tiny pinholes. There is fine paper edge nicking as can be seen in the photos. This print has not been tipped or hung, no tape residue or marks, a nice clean verso.
