Description
An interesting collection in one book, The History of Russia (part of a 4 volume 9 part set - this being the last set) by H Tyrell, tracing Russia since 879 to the age of the late Czars. The three maps are nicely hand color outlined and accompany 6 portraits/scenes from the Czars. The maps are in the Tallis fashion of highly decorative borders and vignettes -- Russia in Asia covers the region from the Urals to Kamchatka and vignettes include Troitsk, Kamchatkan dogs, and a bear fight; the Tartary map shows the region east of the Caspian Sea to China, including a much larger than today's Aral Sea, with vignettes of Tartars, the Bride Chase and a Tent. The Russia in Europe map focuses on the territorial acquisitions by Russia without vignettes.
John Tallis (1817-1876) was an English cartographic publisher. His company, John Tallis and Company, published views, maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851.
