WILLEM JANSOON BLAEU (DUTCH, 1571-1638) OR HEIRS MAP OF VIRGINIA hand-colored engraving on laid paper, "Nova Virginiae Tabula", old label attached verso for Veerhoff Galleries in Washington, DC. Retains rich old color. Matted and housed under glass in a modern frame. Circa 1640. 15 1/4" x 19 1/4" sight, 23 3/4" x 27 3/4" OA.
Excellent visual condition with very minor foxing/discoloration upper right. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the Hague-Hough House, Waterford, VA.Purchased from the Old Print Gallery, Washington, DC, 1987.
Catalogue Note: The present lot is Willem Blaeu's reissue of Jodocus Hondius, Jr.'s initial map based on John Smith's original 1612 charting of Virginia. Blaeu purchased the plate from Hondius's widow in 1629, and he and his heirs produced a number of editions throughout the second and third quarters of the 17th century. This important early map of Virginia was distributed widely throughout Europe and served as something of a signal to world powers at the time of the rising English presence in the New World.
