Bowen, Emanuel. BRITANNIA DEPICTA OR OGILBY IMPROV'D; BEING A CORRECT COPPY OF MR. OGILBY'S ACTUAL SURVEY OF ALL YE DIRECT & PRINCIPAL CROSS ROADS IN ENGLAND AND WALES. London: Tho. Bowles, 1720. 8vo. [6], 273, [1 blank] pp., being the engraved title, 4 p. tables, and 273 pages of engraved maps. Bound in period calf with title on label in gilt, extremities worn and with loss, fly-leaves renewed. With signature and inscription to front pastedown dated 1794 and small paper label of previous owner. First three leaves with corner chips, the whole with light to moderate toning, approx. 12 leaves with old water-stains, foxing in places and a few instances of small minor stains to a few leaves. Good+. ***************************** First edition of this reduced version of John Ogilby's road atlas. Present example contains Bowen's address on title given as "next ye King of Spain", page 8 Sussex "rapes" are numbered, and plate 128 misnumbered 121 (corrected in early ink in this copy).
