Description
NOVUM TESTAMENTUM OMNE, MULTO QUAM ANTEHAC DILIGENTIUS AB [ERASMUS ROTERDAMO] RECOGNITU[M]…. Basel: Froben, March 1519. 13" x 8.25". 120, 566, [2] pp., several fine woodcut borders and various woodcut initials and devices in places throughout. Bound in early vellum with title on label in gilt, vellum toned, front board with slight bowing and small number written in ink near upper border. Title toned, with tissue repair near gutter (verso), old paper repair near lower margin and several small holes caused by early ink oxidation. Endpapers renewed (with paper appropriate to the period), a few instances of marginal pin-hole worming near front and rear, a few leaves toned, leaf c1 with small hole removing a letter, some typical stains and light foxing in various places throughout including a few instances of faded water-stains, overall exhibits signs of average use but not abuse. Good. ******** An interesting example with early marginal notes and underlining throughout, and every instance of Erasmus' name is redacted in early ink (including to title, headlines, and other instances.) Similarly, a former ownership inscription to the lower title has also been obscured in early ink. Though difficult to determine (refer to photo), it is quite possible that the obscured ownership signature is that of Franciscus Junius the younger (Protestant.) Due to the ink redaction of Erasmus' name, it would appear that the present copy fell into Catholic hands. The removal of Erasmus' name is quite thorough, if not personal, and in one instance (Ff1 verso) his name is obscured with a strip of paper, and "Apologia" is inscribed in ink as the heading instead. Catholic disdain for Erasmus can be tied directly to this very translation of the New Testament into Greek and Latin; the present translation, having first appeared in 1516, is considered Erasmus' most significant contribution to the Protestant Reformation. ********* Erasmus' second edition after the first in 1516. This edition corrects some misprints but few alterations are made to the text. According to Erasmus, only 3,300 copies of his first two editions were printed. "[this translation] formed the basis of the New Testament translations of both Luther and Tyndale and hence had profound influence on later Protestant versions of the Bible" (PMM). A volume of Annotations with similar title was also printed to accompany the present work, though the two works are not typically found together.
