Description
This listing is for a lovely enamel lidded wooden box by mid-Century San Diego listed artist Kay Whitcomb (1921-2015).
This unusual box has a hand painted enamel on copper plaque of a prancing stallion signed by the artist inserted in the top. Ms. Whitcomb is nationally recognized for her work during the 1950s-60s-70s with her work featuring fanciful figural elements using many innovative techniques. Her chemical "crust" finishes put her in a class by herself and her enamel on copper pieces are highly collected and are included in many advanced collections of mid-Century modern art.
Measures 4 3/8" long, 3 7/8" wide and 1 7/8" high. The enamel plaque insert measures 3 3/4" long an 3 1/4" high.
Box is signed with initials "K W" on plaque insert and "Kay Whitcomb" on bottom of box.
The wooden box has a ebonized finish and both the box and the enamel insert are in excellent condition reflecting only minor signs of normal wear.
This is a gorgeous box by a well listed San Diego enamel artist who is no longer with us so its investment value should increase continually as well as give you years of enjoyment. Included with the box is printed biography of Ms. Whitcomb.
